EDUCATION / AMERICAN SABOR: LATINOS IN U.S. POPULAR MUSIC
Curriculum and Resources

American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music is the first bilingual, interpretive and interactive museum exhibition to tell the story of the profound influence and impact of Latinos in American popular music. The 5,000 square-foot exhibition focuses on the following themes: How have the musical innovations of Latino youths crossed ethnic and racial boundaries and helped shape American popular music? How have immigration and migration shaped Latino and U.S. popular music? And, in what ways have Latinos musically expressed their experiences as Americans?

In connection with our American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music exhibition, EMP|SFM provides curricula and resources for educators. The lesson plans were written to support the following Washington State Classroom Based Assessments in the Social Studies: Cultural Contributions, Enduring Cultures, and Cultural Interactions. However, the teacher guides, student materials and resources may be of interest to educators in music, English as a Second Language, and Spanish language as well.

The curriculum was authored by Elizabeth Morín, a curator, educator, and arts administrator who currently serves as the Director of the Youth Arts and Education Division of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. Her previous projects include My Los Angeles: Our City's History, Art, and Culture and an educator's guide on Chicano artist Gronk for UCLA's Chicano Studies series of monographs on Latino artists. Additional input was given by Margarita Medina and Alberto Gutierrez.

Curatorial review was provided by Shannon Dudley, Marisol Berríos-Miranda and Michelle Habell-Pallán, guest curators from the University of Washington for American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music.
