Like their counterparts in classical literature, science fiction heroes undertake challenging and dangerous quests, often overcoming impossible odds to save the day, free the oppressed, and restore freedom to their societies. To succeed, they must transcend their fears and conquer their weaknesses. Throughout the course of their adventures, they typically discover something greater than their original goal—previously unknown qualities hidden within themselves until they are revealed at the journey's end:
