2009-10 Investigation Workshops
The Science of Sound
Grades 3–5
We all know that guitars are cool, but how do they make their sound? What's the difference between electric and acoustic guitars? How are amplifiers used to alter sound? In this interactive workshop, students will investigate the different parts of guitars and how they produce sound. By comparing and contrasting a variety of stringed instruments and through in-class experiments, the students will explore the difference between pitch and volume. This workshop supports teaching the third grade Washington State Science GLE and NSF Science and Technology for Children curriculum.
Songwriting
Grades 6–12
Have you ever wondered how your favorite song was written? This workshop focuses on the building blocks of songs: rhythm, tempo, texture and special attention will be paid to the lyrical components. The students will listen to well-known popular songs, examine the song's elements, and write lyrics of their own! Connections will be made between rock songs and poetry, story line and personal narrative. This workshop is of particular interest to educators of music, English and language arts. A variety of genres from EMP|SFM exhibitions will be explored, including country western, rock 'n' roll and the Northwest Sound.
