VolunteerPresident Obama recently announced the "United We Serve" initiative in an effort to encourage community service and volunteerism throughout the country. EMP|SFM is pleased to contribute to this effort by providing community volunteer opportunities. EMP|SFM seeks volunteers who are passionate about music or science fiction - or both! We are looking for volunteers who are upbeat, appreciate learning about music/science fiction and enjoy interacting with our diverse visitors of all ages.

Volunteer Requirements
- Complete necessary training
- Able to make the required time commitment of the pertinent volunteer position
- Successful completion of background check*
- At least a senior in high school (if summer, entering senior year in the fall)
*For the safety of the staff and guests of EMP|SFM, a background check will be completed for all volunteer applicants.

Sound Lab Volunteer
EMP|SFM Sound Lab Volunteers enhance museum visitor's experience by providing support within the popular Sound Lab interactive. Sound Lab is an interactive space within EMP|SFM that encourages visitors to experiment with musical equipment and leave with knowledge on how to perform with a guitar, keys, bass, drums and/or the basics behind music mixing. Sound Lab volunteers have the opportunity to learn more about the technology within Sound Lab and to share this musical knowledge with the diverse visitors of EMP|SFM.
Responsibilities
- Welcoming visitors
- Working in conjunction with Visitor Service Representatives by assisting visitors with experiential equipment
- Managing crowds and lines
- Answering general questions about instruments
- Providing general museum information about EMP|SFM
- Ensuring visitors follow general EMP|SFM rules and that Sound Lab is clean and orderly
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Background in guitar or bass or keys or drums or vocals or audio production or all
- Enjoy interacting with the general public
- Outgoing and friendly
- Complete required training sessions
- Commit at least 6 hours a month of volunteer service
- Make a 6-month commitment to volunteering
- Requires ability to stand for 3 hours
Available Shifts
- 3 hour shifts (morning and afternoon)
- Priority for shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
- Shift times vary slightly during the summer months when the museum is open till 7:00 pm
Taking Aim Gallery Interpreter
EMP|SFM Taking Aim: Rock 'n' Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash gallery interpreter volunteers enhance museum visitors' experience by providing valuable discussion opportunities within the exhibition. The exhibition showcases some of the most memorable photography in the history of popular music, as chosen by a legendary musician who is also renowned as a photographer, collector and pioneer in digital imaging and printing. Volunteers will facilitate discussions centered on the images within the exhibition and participate in extensive training prior to the opening on February 6, 2010.
Responsibilities
- Attend and complete an extensive 6 week training program prior to exhibition opening. Trainings will take place in the evenings at EMP|SFM on 12/1, 12/3, 12/8, 12/10, 12/15, 12/17, 1/19, 1/21, 1/26, 1/28, 2/2 and 2/4
- Leading public discussions on the photographs within the exhibition
- Welcoming visitors
- Answering general questions about the exhibition
- Providing general museum information about EMP|SFM
- Ensuring visitors follow general EMP|SFM rules and that Taking Aim is clean and orderly
- Other duties as assigned
Interpreter Requirements
- Outstanding verbal communication and listening skills
- Comfort with public speaking
- Background in teaching, art or photography is preferred but not required
- Enjoy interacting with the general public and school groups
- Outgoing and friendly
- Passion for music and visual art
- Requires ability to stand for up to 3 hours
Available Shifts – Exhibition Opens February 6, 2010 and closes late-April, 2010
- 3 hour shifts (morning and afternoon)
- Priority for shifts during All Access Nights (first Thursday of the month from 5 – 8 pm) and Family Day (third Saturday of the month from 11 am – 3 pm).
- Second priority dates are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.

- Explaining how to use the photography oriented exhibition interactives and where to pick up an exhibition audio guide
- Managing crowds and lines
- Answering general questions about the exhibition
- Providing general museum information about EMP|SFM
- Ensuring guests follow general EMP|SFM rules and that Taking Aim is clean and orderly
- Other duties as assigned
Interactive Facilitator Requirements
- Enjoy interacting with the general public and school groups
- Outgoing and friendly
- Passion for music and/or imaginative literature and film
- Requires ability to stand for up to 3 hours
Available Shifts – Exhibition Opens February 6, 2010 and closes late-April, 2010

On-Call Programming Volunteer
EMP|SFM On-Call Programming Volunteers assist the museum in providing dynamic public programs and events to the public. Volunteers have the opportunity to interact with the diverse visitors of EMP|SFM while assisting museum staff. Possible programming events include: All Access Night, exhibition openings, Family Days, teacher workshops, Pop Conference, Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival, Sound Off! and more!
Responsibilities:
- Assisting the museum staff event lead as needed
- Greeting the general public, monitoring guest lists and assisting in exhibition interactives as needed
- Assisting with surveys and email collecting
- Answering questions about the program
- Providing general museum information about EMP|SFM
- Directing guests
- Ensuring guests follow general EMP|SFM rules
- Answering scheduling questions about additional EMP|SFM events and programs
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Enjoy interacting with the general public
- Outgoing and friendly
- Complete required training sessions
- Commit at least 3 hours a month of volunteer service
- Passion for music and/or imaginative literature and film
- Make a 6-month commitment to volunteering
- Typically requires ability to stand for 2 – 3 hours
