Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock 'n' Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash
Available June of 2010, Experience Music Project (EMP) presents Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock 'n' Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash. This dynamic new exhibition showcases some of the most memorable photography in the history of popular music: iconic performance shots of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Nirvana; portraits of Bo Diddley, Joni Mitchell, and Johnny Cash; as well as intimate photographs of Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. All chosen by a legendary musician who is also highly regarded as a photographer, collector, and pioneer in digital imaging and printing.
As guest curator, Graham Nash, of Crosby, Stills and Nash, brings his rich musical history, keen eye, and storytelling skills to an exhibition of 98 rock 'n' roll images taken by 40 renowned rock photographers, including Anton Corbijn, Lynn Goldsmith, Annie Leibovitz, Daniel Kramer, Jim Marshall, Neal Preston, Mick Rock, Francesco Scavullo, Alfred Wertheimer, and Nash himself.
Organizing the exhibition with Jasen Emmons, EMP's director of curatorial affairs, Nash considered thousands of images and received invaluable feedback from an advisory panel including Sylvia Wolf, former photography curator at the Whitney and current director of the Henry Art Gallery; and Christian Peterson, associate curator of photography at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Nash selected what he considers to be great photographs that exemplify the spirit of rock 'n' roll, whether the artist is Elvis Presley, Sid Vicious or Johnny Cash. The result is an unprecedented exhibition of rock 'n' roll's most unforgettable photographs.
On the traveling exhibition's audio tour, Nash shares his insights and stories about the images, artists and photographers, as well as his connections to them. The personal and informal audio tour gives visitors the feeling of having Graham Nash give them a personal tour of the exhibition.
At a time when more museums are beginning to explore rock 'n' roll photography, Graham Nash's eye and perspective make this one of the most unique, exciting and hands-on exhibitions in years.
