POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the Manager of Interpretation and Educator resources by coordinating the training and efforts of the part-time gallery guides and floor volunteers. The guides and volunteers will provide excellent museum experiences for guided group visits to the exhibitions and interactive galleries such as Sound Lab; as well as visitors participating in public programs and All Access Nights. Working closely with other EMP|SFM staff, especially the Visitor Experience and Public Programming Managers, this position will coordinate recruiting, training, and the day-to-day supervision required to produce lively and engaging interpretive staff and knowledgeable floor volunteers. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Gallery Guides
  • Assist Manager with development and implementation of new part-time gallery guides, including special recruitment; coordinate training program and training materials.
  • Prepare gallery guides monthly work schedule; provide day-to day supervision and trouble-shooting for guides on the Museum floor; assist Manager with staff evaluations and performance reviews.
  • Schedule and conduct new exhibition briefings, and prepare briefing materials.
  • Act as a Lead Museum Educator, modeling new teaching methodologies and programs, filling in for staff as needed, and acting as liaison between interpretive staff and other departments and managers.
Floor Volunteers
  • Work with Manager to develop a comprehensive outreach strategy and recruit new volunteers; screen volunteer applicants and assign to appropriate duties at EMP|SFM.
  • Schedule and conduct volunteer orientation and training sessions and prepare materials.
  • Schedule and supervise volunteers; assist Manager with evaluating volunteer performance and resolving problems.
  • Coordinate maintenance of volunteer spaces and resources, communication with volunteers, and volunteer recognition events, awards and publicity.
  • Coordinate museum staff visitor-service requirement program and maintain staff visitor-service records.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills and Experience
  • 2-3 years experience conducting work-place training programs and/or classroom teaching
  • Keen interest in American popular culture, especially popular music and imaginative fiction and film
  • Knowledge of educational theories and museum interpretation techniques; familiarity with object-centered and visitor-centered interpretation preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfort with public speaking required
  • Experience with volunteering, ideally in a museum setting, and working with volunteers
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
 
Education/Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Art, Music, Humanities, History, or other related field.
