POSITION SUMMARY:
The Public Programs Producer (Temporary) leads the development and implementation of high-quality programs and events to support EMP’s mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determining content and format of public programs
  • Researching and developing programs, events, concerts and festivals that illuminate the exhibitions of the museum
  • Designing and implementing collaborative projects with other institutions
  • Writing, editing and planning program promotional materials
  • Negotiating performance agreements with artists in conjunction with museum programming
  • Networking with the local music and popular arts industry professionals
  • Developing programming partnerships with local community, arts, nonprofit and social service organizations
  • Acting as chief project manager for EMP’s signature public programs including Sound Off!, Pop Conference, SFFSFF (Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Film Festival), Exhibitchin’(s), After Hours and more
  • Attending conferences, showcases and meetings with presenters
  • Researching and negotiating support and funding for public programs in collaboration with the Development department.
  • Participates in the development and control of the program department budget; prepares financial projections and event budgets and ensures expenditures comply.
  • Participates in development activities; identifies potential sources of funding and participates in the preparation and submission of grant proposals.
  • Review procedures and systems then plans and implements changes as needed to reduce expenses or increase income.
  • Supervises production of public program and marketing events. Acts as liaison with other departments to ensure events operate smoothly and efficiently.
  • Participates in marketing of programs including creating advertising, promotional and outreach strategies.  Writes and edits copy for web and member communications, information brochures, press releases, etc.
  • Represents the department at public events; introduces speakers and performers, monitors audience flow and troubleshoots as needed.  Supervises volunteer staff at events. 
  • Performs managerial duties including assisting with interviewing applicants for employment or internships.  Assigns and reviews progress of assignments.
  • Assists with recruiting, training, and supervising interns.  Provides leadership and supervision for volunteers as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

To perform effectively in this position, a person must have:   
  • A working knowledge of developing and implementing programming for a cultural organization, with emphasis on lectures, literary programs, film, conversation, festivals, live performances, multi-media and other contemporary methods.
  • Demonstrated success creating, developing and implementing effective programming.
  • Relationships and contacts within the music and entertainment industry.
  • Very effective verbal and listening communications skills along with the ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds.
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to supervise a staff of from five to ten, plus provide leadership to major projects.  Ability to build teams and collaborate with others on major projects.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines in a fast-paced rapidly changing environment.
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and multi-media programs.
  • Basic accounting skills to develop and manage budgets.
  • Current, and valid, driver’s license plus proof of insurance if using vehicle while working on EMP business.
  • Ability to write and edit a wide variety of communications materials.
  • Active listening and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop productive relationships across the organization and across the field.
  • A sense for the entrepreneurial, high standards, self-motivation, flexibility, ingenuity, dedication, creativity, enthusiasm and high energy. 
  • A keen appreciation and understanding of EMP’s mission.
  • Ability to work many evenings and weekends.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree highly preferred.  Typically, the skills and knowledge needed to perform well in this position are the result of a degree in film, theater, media, marketing or communications or related discipline.
  • Several years of increasingly responsible professional and managerial experience in similar program/production jobs.
  • Experience working in the music industry or in museum programming essential.
  • Experience with non-profit funding desired.
