As a teenager, Bo Diddley built a home-made rectangular guitar while he was a student at Chicago’s Foster Vocational School. He liked the design so much that later he had the Gretsch guitar company manufacture custom-made rectangular electric guitar models and they became his trademark. In at least one interview, he said that he adopted the shape after hurting himself while jumping around during a performance with a traditional guitar. He thought a rectangular guitar allowed him to move more freely.
